The Tweed’s natural setting in the remnant caldera of an ancient shield volcano provides a visually awe-inspiring introduction to the Northern Rivers Rail Trail experience.

As the northern gateway to the 132km trail, the art deco township of Murwillumbah offers a wealth of pre- and post-trip attractions – such as the outstanding Tweed River Art Gallery and World Heritage listed Wollumbin National Park – as well as a wide range of affordable accommodation.

Stepping out through the Valley, rail-trailers will find themselves immersed in a lush landscape of organic farmland, sub-tropical rainforests and art villages, set against the ever-present backdrop of Wollumbin Mt Warning.

Tweed Shire Council and the Shire’s tourism promotional body, Destination Tweed, are staunch proponents of the rail trail concept, with a keen appreciation of the economic benefits it will bring to the tourism sector and wider community.

In addition to their on-going support of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail Association Inc, Tweed Shire Council has already initiated investigations into a pilot project to demonstrate the benefits of the concept by constructing a rail trail from historic Murwillumbah Railway Station to the Tweed River Art Gallery.
